Havana, 17 May 2022. Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio pointed out on Tuesday that the blockade imposed by the United States on the island prevails, despite the recent measures announced by Washington.
On Twitter, the deputy foreign minister said that this hostile policy “continues to be a system of unilateral coercive economic measures extraordinarily comprehensive and abusive, a fundamental tool of US policy whose goal is the suffering of the Cuban people.”
He also considered that Latin America and Cuba maintain a categorical position against the blockade imposed on the island, which has been consolidated in recent times.
“That policy is a fundamental contradiction between the United States and the region,” he said.
The US Department of State on Monday announced a package of measures that relax some of the 243 rules imposed by the administration of former Republican President Donald Trump (2017-2021).
These measures include the reinstatement of the Family Reunification Program and the intention to process 20,000 annual visas under bilateral immigration agreements.
They also foresee authorizing professional and educational contacts, expanding travel to that country with multiple entry visas and establishing flights to the provinces, currently restricted to Havana, as well as eliminating the cap on remittances of 1,000 dollars every three months.
