Accra, November 13, 2023. - The first activity on the programme for the visit of the Vice President of the Republic of Cuba, Salvador Valdes Mesa, to Ghana was a meeting with representatives of the Cuba Solidarity Campaign-Ghana. The meeting also brought together members of the Cuban resident community, graduates in Cuba, friends of parliament, businessmen and diplomatic representatives.
At the meeting, the Vice President addressed the special significance of Africa's affection for the Cuban people, and recalled that this visit takes place in the context of the 64th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, which took place on 23 December 1959. He said that it is Cuba's intention to revive the historic and stable relations between the peoples and governments of the two countries. Valdés Mesa also updated those present on the Cuban reality, the harmful effects of the blockade on the island and the unjust inclusion of Cuba on the List of State Sponsors of Terrorism (SSTL). He attested that the United States has been determined to destroy the Cuban Revolution, but that Cuba has resisted and will continue to resist, just as it overcame Covid 19.
For his part, the leader of Solidarity with Cuba and of the Socialist Movement of Ghana, the renowned journalist Dr. Kwesi Pratt Jnr., reaffirmed that Africa will always accompany the Cuban cause, its solidarity and humanism. He added that Cuba is an inspiration to the oppressed people of the world.
The graduates in Cuba extended their appreciation to the Vice President and expressed their great gratitude to the island in the voice of the President of the ESBECAN Association who stated that they will never forget what Cuba has done for them. In his turn, Samuel Afari, a forestry engineer who graduated on the island said: “In Cuba I learned not only a profession, I also learned the discipline”; which has enabled him to develop successfully in the tourism sector, employing 1500 workers directly and 500 indirectly.
The Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, Anette Chao García said that the affection and commitment witnessed this day is “the fruit of what our Revolution has done for this country and its people”.
For his part, the Vice President of the Republic of Cuba concluded: “Relations between Cuba and Ghana have gone beyond all stages and we will continue to deepen them”.
