March 23, 2018 marks the 30th anniversary of the battle of Cuito Cuanavale, a small town in the Angolan province of Cuando Cubango, 825 kilometers southeast of Luanda, at the confluence of the Cuito and Cuanavale rivers, from which it takes its name.
That remote town became a symbol of resistance and courage, after the victory of the Popular Armed Forces for the Liberation of Angola (FAPLA), together with Cuban, Namibian and South African internationalists, against the army of the opprobrious Apartheid regime.
Cuban Ambassador to Guyana, Narciso Amador Socorro, participated in the analysis meeting of the Cuban Medical Brigade (BMC) in that country in 2017. The head of the diplomatic mission congratulated the collaborators whose work has also been recognized by the Pan American Health Organization and Guyana's Ministry of Public Health. The BMC is made up of 196 professionals, 55 percent of whom are women. In 2017 the BMC cared for a total of 391,617 patients and saved 9,418 lives. During the meeting, representatives of Cuban medical cooperation and Embassy officials paid tribute to the National Hero José Martí and the leader of the Cuban Revolution Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, who inspired internationalism and educated generations of Cubans, always present. The Cuban Society of Pharmacology, the International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR) and their respective Sections of Immunopharmacology, as well as the most prestigious Cuban institutions in the field of immunology, immunopharmacology, vaccine development and biotechnology sciences are organizing the Second International Convention IMMUNOPHARMACOLOGY–VACCIPHARMA 2017, scheduled for June 25-29, 2017 at the Meliá Marina Varadero Hotel, in Varadero beach, Cuba. This Convention is the fusion of the 4th International Congress on Immunopharmacology (IMMUNOPHARMACOLOGY 2017) and the 4th International Congress on Pharmacology of Vaccines (VACCIPHARMA 2017).
The Cuban Medical Brigade in The Gambia dressed in its best to close the programme of activities to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the arrival of the first collaborators of the island to the small African country and the beginning of the medical collaboration between the two nations.
