The Cuban Delegation appreciates the presentation of the Secretary-General’s Reports, and resolutely supports the work of the Special Committee on the Charter and its agenda. We are pleased to have worked jointly with the chairmanship of the Committee and with Member States in order to foster the fulfillment of the mandate of General Assembly Resolution 3349 (XXIX), which gave rise to this Committee.

We are grateful to you for convening this meeting to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances, in line with General Assembly Resolution 70/160.

Achieving peace remains a challenge for the international community. Stable and sustainable peace for all can only be achieved through strict respect for the Charter of the United Nations, especially, respect for the principles of sovereign equality, territorial integrity and political independence of States.

Agradecemos el informe presentado por el Secretario General en el cual recoge un análisis de las acciones realizadas durante el período por el Sistema de Naciones Unidas para la promoción del deporte en aras del desarrollo sostenible y la paz.
Consideramos que las iniciativas llevadas a cabo han sido positivas y reflejan una vez más que el deporte constituye una excelente herramienta para promover la integración, inclusión social y el desarrollo.

The emergence of the Human Rights Council resulted from the need to address double standards, political confrontation and manipulation of the former Human Rights Commission. The negative practices that discredited the Commission, which are strongly rejected by Cuba, should be re-edited within this organ.

Slave trade and the legacy of slavery are the root causes of profound social and economic inequalities, hatred, fanaticism, racism and prejudice that today continue to affect people of African descent.

Cuba believes that the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) is undoubtedly one of the most praiseworthy initiatives ever produced in the African continent over the last decades. The purposes of NEPAD reflect the commitment of the political leaders of the region to the continent´s political, economic and social progress.
