71 Session

71 AGNU: Statement by H.E. Mr. Abelardo Moreno Fernández, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba at the UN General Assembly meeting to commemorate the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

Mr. Chairman,

The Cuban delegation aligns itself with the statements delivered by the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement and by the Dominican Republic, on behalf of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

We live the absurdity of a world that incurs exorbitant expenditure on armaments, including ever-more-deadly nuclear weapons, while asserting that there are not enough resources to promote development and combat hunger, poverty and disease.

71 AGNU: Statement by H.E. Mr. Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba, at the General Debate of the seventy-first session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Mr. President;

Mr. Secretary-General;

Heads of State and Government;

Distinguished delegates;

Statistics could not be more eloquent.  Eighty per cent of the world’s population owns only 6 per cent of all the richness, while the 1 per cent richest enjoys half of the planet’s patrimony.

No less than 795 million persons in the world suffer from chronic hunger and every day 18 000 children die of poverty. More than 660 million persons consume unsafe water and 780 million adults and 103 million youths are illiterate.

71 UNGA: Statement by H.E. Mr. Abelardo Moreno Fernández, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, at the high-level segment to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development.

Mr. President,

Thirty years ago, we took an important step forward when considering development not only as a goal, but a right for all. We then acknowledged that this right may be applied regardless of our birthplace, social condition, color of the skin or affiliation to a social group.

71 UNGA: Statement by H. E. Mr. Abelardo Moreno Fernández, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs at the General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly´s High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance.

Mr. President,

As we discuss microbial resistance, 400 million people across the globe do not have access to basic health services. An important part of them will die owing to a lack of access to the most essential medicines. Indeed, many will perish because they will not be able to use common antimicrobials, and even for not having anyone to prescribe them.

It is shameful that some 18,000 children around the world die every day from poverty-related causes or that only 70 per cent of the world population has adequate social protection coverage.

71 UNGA: Statement by H.E. Mr. Abelardo Moreno Fernández, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs at the General Debate of the High-Level Meeting on addressing large movements of migrants and refugees.

Mr. President,

Over the last two years, shocking images have been seen which show movements of desperate people crossing the Mediterranean en route to Europe, as a direct consequence of the destabilization actions of NATO in Middle Eastern and North African countries, and the persistent underdevelopment and poverty in the countries of the African continent.
