75 UNGA: Statement by Dr. José Ángel Portal Miranda, Minister of Public Health of Cuba at the High-Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS. New York, 9 June 2021.

Mr. President,

Twenty years after the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS, inequalities in access to health not only persist, but in many nations they are increasing. This unjust scenario has been compounded by the negative impact of COVID-19, which affects the implementation of the global targets of the 2030 Agenda and imposes restrictions on their full achievement.

The delegation of Cuba wishes to thank you for your decision to convene this plenary meeting for the joint debate of items 37 “The situation in the Middle East” and 38 “Question of Palestine”, after the request of the delegations of Niger and Algeria, in their capacities as Chair of the Organization of the Islamic Conference and Chair of the Arab Group, respectively, as well as that of the Chair of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement.

Mr. President,

We endorse the statement delivered by the delegation of Azerbaijan on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement.

We thank the People's Republic of China for holding this open debate, which is more than opportune in an international context that imposes the strengthening of multilateralism, full respect for the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and international law, as well as cooperation and solidarity to jointly face the numerous challenges of our time.

Mr. President,

Thirty-five years ago, the terrible nuclear accident at Chernobyl affected the lives of thousands of people, particularly in Ukraine, Belarus and Russia; and for the first time tested the response of the international community to such a catastrophe.

We also wish to thank the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco, for the active work over the last two years as Chairman of the Committee and the outgoing board members.

Mankind is facing a complex scenario and colossal challenges. International peace and security are threatened by the increase in conflicts and unconventional warfare, while the COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a crisis with manifold and devastating effects that transcend the area of health and affect economy, trade and our societies in general.

75 UNGA: Statement by the Cuban delegation at the general discussion of the 11th session of the United Nations. Open-ended Working Group on Ageing. New York, 29 March 2021

Madam Chair,

The work of the Open-ended Working Group on Ageing is of great significance for Cuba. Population ageing is one of the most complex socio-demographic challenges facing our country.

Thanks to the work of the Revolution in favor of the health and well-being of its population´s, today life expectancy in Cuba is 78.45 years; and by 2030, 30 percent of our population is expected to be 60 years old or older.
