United States: Unilateral designation of states as sponsors of terrorism adversely affects human rights, UN experts warn

UN experts* today urged the United States to review its national framework that triggers targeted sanctions against States designated as Sponsors of Terrorism (SSTs).

Currently, four countries - the Republic of Cuba, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Syrian Arab Republic - appear on this US State Department list, with additional restrictions imposed as a result of the designation.

1,230 Procedures under Jamaica-Cuba Eye Care Programme since September 2023

Jamaicans continue to benefit under the Jamaica-Cuba Eye Care Programme with 1, 230 sight-saving procedures conducted since September 2023.

The programme, which has been operating in Jamaca since 2010, resumed last September after being suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kingston, 27 January 2024. Convened by the Jamaica-Cuba Friendship Association, a political-cultural evening took place in celebration of the 65th anniversary of the triumph of the Revolution. Present at the event were the Ambassador of Cuba to Jamaica Fermín Quiñones Sánchez, members of the State Mission, Cuban residents, graduates in Cuba and members of political organisations and social movements that integrate the Movement of Solidarity with Cuba.

Kingston, 26 January 2024. As part of the activities developed in remembrance of the 171st anniversary of the birth of José Martí, the second meeting of the Martian class took place with members of the Cuban Educational Brigade working in Jamaica and students and teachers of the Ardenne High School in  Kingston. Those present were able to learn little-known details of the Apostle's life, his stay in Jamaica and his vast literary production.

Spanish Town, 26 January 2024. During the celebration of the homage to our National Hero at the "José Martí" Technical High School, the figures of two Spanish teachers, Pastor Cruz and Nelson Brown, stand out. Both are Cuban residents with different life stories, but with one thing in common: their love for teaching, the history of Cuba and Martí's ideals.
