Unilateral designation of States as Sponsors of Terrorism negatively impact human rights, warn UN experts.

GENEVA (8 February 2024) – UN experts* today urged the United States to review its domestic framework that triggers specific sanctions against States designated as Sponsors of Terrorism (SST).

Currently four countries – the Republic of Cuba, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPR Korea), the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Syrian Arab Republic – figure on this U.S. Department of State list, with additional restrictions imposed on them because of the designation.

Attack on U.S. embassy proves that Cuba is a victim of terrorism

The recent attack against the Cuban embassy in the United States is today a reminder to the world that the Caribbean country is a victim of terrorism and has been so for a long time.

This is what the head of the Cuban Mission in this capital, Lianys Torres, warned when speaking with Prensa Latina about the events of September 24, which generated a broad rejection here from various sectors.

Cuba urges to consider attack on embassy as terrorism

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Tuesday urged the United States to class terrorists those promoters of terror attacks on the Cuban embassy in Washington.

“In addition to investigating and punishing the culprit, the U.S. authorities could be fair and give them the place they really deserve on States Sponsoring Terrorism (SST) list to those who actually finance such acts,” the Cuban leader posted on X social media, while adding they should get Cuba out of the SST list.

During the night of September 24, 2023, a terrorist attack occurred against the premises of the Cuban Embassy in the United States, when an individual threw two Molotov cocktails from the sidewalk over the perimeter fence of the facility, which hit the front wall of that diplomatic mission. There were no injuries to the personnel who were present at that headquarters. At the request of the Cuban diplomatic mission, officers of the United States Secret Service arrived at the building and had access to its facilities to verify the violent action perpetrated.

Cuban Foreign Minister Denounces Terrorist Attack Against the Cuban Embassy in the US

The Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, denounced on his Twitter account a terrorist attack perpetrated on the night of Sunday, September 24 against the Cuban embassy in the United States. Apparently, an individual threw two Molotov cocktails. So far, no injuries to personnel have been reported and details are being clarified.

It is the second violent attack against the Cuban diplomatic headquarters in Washington since April 2020. On that occasion, an individual fired an assault rifle at the headquarters.

Solidarity rally called in front of the Cuban Embassy in the US

Representatives of solidarity organizations will gather on Sunday to express their support for Cuba in front of the Cuban Embassy in the United States, which was the victim of a terrorist attack on Sunday night.

Activist Calla Walsh, co-president of the National Network of Solidarity with Cuba, convened the rally, scheduled for Monday afternoon, at 5:30 p.m., local time, to bring flowers to the diplomatic headquarters in rejection of the new aggression and as a sign of support for the Caribbean island.
