On behalf of the Cuban delegation, we welcome His Excellency, Mr. Santiago Cafiero, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship of the Argentine Republic to the Decolonization Committee, as well as the delegation accompanying him this time.

We associate ourselves with the remarks delivered by Bolivia on behalf of CELAC.

Our delegation associates itself with the statements delivered by Pakistan on behalf of the Group of 77 and China. In like manner, we support the statement delivered by Costa Rica on behalf of the Group of Friends of Spanish (GAE).

Mr. Chair;

We endorse the statement delivered by Indonesia on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement.

We congratulate you on your election as Chairman of the Disarmament Commission for this year's substantive session. We extend our congratulations to the members of the Bureau and the chairs of the working groups.

Speech by Ambassador Pedro Luis Pedroso Cuesta at the High-Level Meeting of the UN General Assembly to commemorate and promote the International Day against Nuclear Tests. New York, 8 September 2021.

Mr. President,

We align ourselves with the statement pronounced by Mexico on behalf of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

The importance of holding this high-level meeting is reinforced in light of the continuous modernization and expansion of nuclear arsenals, in a context in which the millions of dollars of resources devoted to this field must be redirected to efforts to address the current global crisis, exacerbated by COVID-19 and affecting every sphere of life.

Madam Chair,

Article 73 e of the Charter of the United Nations establishes that Member States which have or assume responsibilities for the administration of territories whose peoples have not yet attained a full measure of self-government, must transmit regularly to the Secretary-General information on the economic and social conditions in the territories for which they are respectively responsible.

We recognize the work that the Permanent Forum has carried out in its twenty years of existence in the six areas of its mandate, to examine indigenous issues in a comprehensive manner.

First and foremost, allow me to express our congratulations on your appointment as Chairman of the Committee, which I extend to the distinguished elected members of the Board. I reiterate our best wishes for their success in performing their duties.

We also wish to thank the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco, for the active work over the last two years as Chairman of the Committee and the outgoing board members.
