Disarmament Commission

76 UNGA: Remarks by Ambassador Pedro Luis Pedroso Cuesta, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations General exchange of views at the Disarmament Commission. New York, 4 April 2022.

Mr. Chair;

We endorse the statement delivered by Indonesia on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement.

We congratulate you on your election as Chairman of the Disarmament Commission for this year's substantive session. We extend our congratulations to the members of the Bureau and the chairs of the working groups.

Speech by Ambassador Pedro Luis Pedroso Cuesta at the High-Level Meeting of the UN General Assembly to commemorate and promote the International Day against Nuclear Tests. New York, 8 September 2021.

Mr. President,

We align ourselves with the statement pronounced by Mexico on behalf of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

The importance of holding this high-level meeting is reinforced in light of the continuous modernization and expansion of nuclear arsenals, in a context in which the millions of dollars of resources devoted to this field must be redirected to efforts to address the current global crisis, exacerbated by COVID-19 and affecting every sphere of life.

71 UNGA: Statement by the Representative of Cuba, Ambassador Rodolfo Benítez Versón on the adoption of the Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty.

Madam President:

The adoption of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons represents a historic milestone. More than a result of the Conference that we are successfully concluding today, this instrument is the result of a process of multilateral discussions over 70 years, which began with the adoption by the UN General Assembly of its first resolution, on January 24, 1946, which called for the elimination of nuclear weapons.

71 UNGA: Cuba at the beginning of the Second Session of the UN Conference to negotiate a legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons leading towards their total elimination.

Madam Chair,

First and foremost, I would like to express the satisfaction of the Cuban delegation to see that a representative of a Latin American sister nation is presiding over this important Conference. I wish you success in undertaking your important responsibilities and I assure you that you can count on the support of our delegation.

I also take this opportunity to welcome the new High Representative of the United Nations for Disarmament Affairs, Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu.

71 UNGA: Statement by Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal, Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, at the Inaugural session of the United Nations Disarmament Commission.

Madam chair,

The delegation of Cuba fully supports the statement made by the delegation of Indonesia on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement, and the speech by the delegation of El Salvador on behalf of CELAC.

We congratulate you on your election as Chairwoman of the Disarmament Commission during the substantive sessions of this year. We extend our congratulations to the members of the Bureau and to the chairs of the working groups. We wish you success in the exercise of your responsibilities and assure you of our cooperation.
