Statement by Yuri Gala López, Deputy Permanent Representative at the Cuban Permanent Mission to United Nations to the Special Committee on Decolonization following the adoption of  the resolution on  the question of Puerto Rico (A/AC./2023/L.)

New York, June 22nd, 2023.

Ms. President,

I would like to thank all the members of the Special Committee on Decolonization and the Delegations that have spoken under this item for their strong and valuable support for the resolution on the question of Puerto Rico submitted by Cuba, the Plurinational State of Bolivia, Nicaragua, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, the Syrian Arab Republic and the Russian Federation.

It is notable that the resolution was once again adopted by consensus.

The numerous and substantive statements made by members and non-members of the Committee, including the statement made on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, CELAC, are a clear demonstration of the support for the cause of the Puerto Rican people.

We received with great satisfaction the important contributions made by the various representatives of the sister island of Puerto Rico who attended as petitioners, and who each day provide new and significant contributions to our work.

The approval of this resolution is a tribute to the patriotic spirit of the Puerto Rican people and to the tradition of struggle led by their heroes, who are also those of Cuba and all of Our America.

To conclude, we reiterate that the Puerto Rican people will invariably count on our solidarity. Cuba will continue to defend the legitimate right of the people of Puerto Rico to their self-determination and independence with the irrevocable commitment to accompany them until the ultimate victory.

Thank you
