Kingston, 10 January 2022. The Ambassadot of Cuba to Jamaica, Fermín Quiñones Sánchez, and the Second Secretary of this diplomatic mission, Rolando Dávila Gallardo, attended the 46th anniversary ceremony of the "José Martí" Technical School.
This centre, inaugurated on 10 January 1977 as a Secondary School, was a gift from the government and people of Cuba to Jamaica. It exhibits a modular building design and other architectural elements typical of schools built in our country in the 1970s.
During the activity, Kevin Jellow, president of the New York branch of the Association of Graduates of the centre, expressed his gratitude for Cuba's solidarity and cooperation with the peoples of the world, including the Jamaican people. Sandra Swyer-Watson, President of the School's Board of Trustees, called the West Indian nation a beacon for the world and demanded the lifting of the US economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba.
In his words to those present, the Ambassador recalled the significance of the school as a sign of solidarity and friendship between peoples, and recalled the special relationship of the Cuban Apostle with the children. He called on the students to continue their education, as "they are the future of Jamaica".
As part of the event, an awards ceremony was held, recognising the outstanding work of a group of students in different academic spheres.
