Kuala Lumpur, November 13, 2025. The Embassy of Cuba in Malaysia commemorated the 5th anniversary of Cuba's accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC). On November 10, 2020, Cuba became the first Caribbean nation and the fifth Latin American nation to join this instrument, thus demonstrating its commitment to continue strengthening relations with ASEAN member countries based on mutual respect, solidarity, and cooperation.
The Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) establishes a framework of fundamental principles to promote peace, stability, and regional cooperation among Southeast Asian countries and with other nations of the world. Adopted by ASEAN in 1976, the treaty is based on mutual respect for sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, the peaceful settlement of disputes, and the renunciation of the use of force. Its main objective is to foster trust, understanding and political, economic and social collaboration among States, creating a safe and stable environment that promotes joint development and friendly relations among the signatory nations.
ASEAN as a regional bloc continues to be an interesting integration process, which Cubans appreciate for its firm support for lifting the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the US and for the exclusion of our country from the list of alleged state sponsors of terrorism.
