On the 80th anniversary of the United Nations Charter, Cuba reaffirmed its commitment to multilateralism and sustainable development at the UN.

During the commemorative session for the 80th anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Charter, Ambassador Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the UN, addressed the General Assembly to reiterate our country's firm and unwavering commitment to the Organization's founding principles.

In his speech, the Cuban diplomat condemned in the strongest terms the Israeli genocide against the Palestinian people, as well as the recent unjustified attacks by Israel and the United States against the Islamic Republic of Iran. He emphasized that both acts represent a new and dangerous escalation of the conflict in the Middle East and constitute a blatant violation of the United Nations Charter and international law.

Ambassador Soberón warned about the current complex international scenario, characterized by economic crisis, climate change, geopolitical tensions and armed conflicts, as well as blockades, unconventional wars and repeated violations of principles underpinning the UN. In this context, he denounced the diversion of resources towards the arms race, while the Sustainable Development Goals are not being met, hunger is growing and poverty persists.

The Permanent Representative of Cuba underscored the urgent need to reform the international economic order, eradicate the root causes of conflicts and modify unsustainable patterns of production and consumption. He called for an immediate end to unilateral coercive measures and demanded that developed countries comply with their development and climate change commitments.

In his message, he recalled the words of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz before the General Assembly in 1960: “Do away with the philosophy of spoiling, and you will have done away forever with the philosophy of war”.

He concluded with a call to strengthen solidarity and international cooperation, and to make full use of the role of the United Nations, in particular the General Assembly, as a legitimate and necessary instrument to face the common challenges of humanity.
