Raúl Castro Ruz on his 95th birthday

The people, with their proverbial wisdom, call him by his name. And today it is a saying from San Antonio to Maisí because Raúl is Raúl. There is no other possible definition. The steadfastness of his character stood at the forefront of every skirmish the enemy plotted to destroy the Revolution.
Yet, modest and loyal at the same time, he stood by Fidel, who had the privilege of always having him at his disposal. His work is immense because he took up the banners of the most generous, of those most devoted to the tasks of unrelenting emancipation, that is to say, Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, Ignacio Agramonte, José Martí and Antonio Maceo, as well as those of the heroes and heroines who fell throughout countless struggles, whilst at the same time being the one who took Cuba’s ideas of independence to their highest expression, as a true mambí, straddling two centuries.
