Kingston, Jamaica, 3 June 2020.
Nurses Liudanis Sánchez and Laritza Nápoles currently contribute to the quality of life of the people of Jamaica, an example of Cuba’s medical internationalism in the days of Covid-19.
They both are part of the contingent of 434 healthcare professionals from the largest island in the Antilles who now support the Jamaican nation’s efforts against the threat of the novel coronavirus, SAR-CoV-2, causing the fatal disease.
In an exchange with Prensa Latina via the internet, the brigade members stressed the solidarity and humanism of the Cuban health system, while highlighting the gratitude received from the authorities and the people of Jamaica.
A native of the Cuban province of Mayabeque, Sánchez is a community nursing specialist and since her arrival in Kingston on March 21, she has rendered her services in one of the hospitals in the Jamaican capital.
Attending almost 50 patients with chronic and infectious diseases and treating possible suspects to Covid-19 stand out in the daily work of this Cuban nurse, who adheres to all the protective measures to avoid contagion.
At the same time, registered nurse Nápoles, fulfills her second internationalist mission in Jamaica, this time providing assistance in the surgery and emergency rooms of the Annotto Bay Hospital, after she arrived in the Caribbean island in August 2018.
She is from the municipality of Manati, Las Tunas, in eastern Cuba, and accrues new experiences in her professional career, after previous tenures in Jamaica (2003-2006) and in Saint Lucia (2010-2012).
Both Liudanis Sánchez and Laritza Nápoles uphold from their jobs the Cuban principle of helping those most in need and call their families for discipline and responsibility, in order to overcome the Covid-19 disease.
Thanks to the renewal of the Bilateral Agreement on Technical Assistance in Health, Cuban cooperation brigade members support the response to the pandemic, by providing health care in the four regions and 14 parishes of the Jamaican geography.
