Abuja, February 16, 2025 - For the sixteenth consecutive occasion, the 38th Assembly of the African Union, made up of the African Heads of State and Government, approved a resolution rejecting the economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed by the government of the United States against Cuba, a cruel policy that has scourged the Cuban people for more than six decades.
The adopted text contemplates, for the second time, the African organization's request to remove the Caribbean nation from the arbitrary unilateral list of countries that allegedly sponsor terrorism.
The African leaders also expressed in the document their concern for the negative impact of the blockade, which is aggravated and even more cruel in the current context, when Cuba is facing the economic and social effects of several severe natural phenomena that have recently hit the country. They also alluded to the extraterritorial nature of this hostile policy, including the application of Title III of the Helms Burton Act.
The African Union resolution is yet another demonstration of the close and fraternal ties that exist between the peoples of Africa and Cuba and of the ongoing African solidarity for the elimination of the unjust and illegal U.S. policy.
The African Union's commitment to the defense of Cuba is based on the historical ties of solidarity and cooperation that unite them.
In multiple international forums, African states advocate for the end of the blockade and recognize Cuba's contribution in key sectors such as health, education and the fight against colonialism.
