AKEL in Havana, Cuba, for the 24th International Meeting of Communist and Workers’ Parties

6 August 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

AKEL is taking part in the 24th International Meeting of Communist and Workers’ Parties, which is being held in Havana, Cuba, from 7 to 9 August, under the theme "Defending and honouring the legacy of the Cuban Revolution on the centenary of Fidel’s birth; deepening solidarity with socialist Cuba; strengthening our joint actions; and uniting our forces for peace and against imperialist aggression”.

The International Meeting of Communist and Workers’ Parties has been taking place every year since 1998 in various countries around the world and serves as a forum for dialogue where Communist and Workers’ Parties exchange views and coordinate their joint action. AKEL will be represented by Vera Polycarpou, Head of International Relations and European Policy of AKEL and member of the Central Committee of the Party.

At the same time, AKEL, represented by Vera Polycarpou, will also participate in an international symposium being organised by the “Fidel Castro” Centre on the occasion of the International Meeting in Cuba and the 100th anniversary – on 13 August – of the birth of the country’s historic leader, Fidel Castro.

The Symposium – which will include separate conferences for young people, Members of Parliament, and figures from the world of letters and the arts – will focus on the struggles for the people's justice and peace to which Fidel dedicated his entire life.

These two major international gatherings are taking place in Cuba at a time of heightened aggression and threats from the US and the Trump administration against Cuba, whilst the illegal energy blockade of the country over many months is having a severe impact on the daily lives of the Cuban people.

In these conditions, the expected mass participation of parties and organisations from all continents represents a powerful expression of international solidarity with Cuba and its people on the path they themselves have sovereignly chosen.
