The meeting, which included the ambassadors of Canada (the host country), Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Mexico, and Peru, focused primarily on current international and national issues. Mr. Tsipras also addressed the recent creation of the new political party ELAS, which he leads.
The former prime minister emphasized the need to respect the Charter of the United Nations and to return to diplomacy "for all." He also stressed that, especially in the current period of increasing conflict and destabilization, the need for understanding and cooperation among "middle powers" at the global and regional levels is imperative, with diplomacy, international law, and the construction of a more equitable multipolar system of international relations as guiding principles.
Similarly, Tsipras reiterated his support for the immediate lifting of US restrictions and sanctions against Cuba, advocating for a diplomatic solution to the crisis within the framework of international law, with respect for human rights and the Cuban people's right to self-determination. He also referred to the historical ties between the Greek left and Latin American countries.
Alexis Tsipras was accompanied by diplomatic advisor Dimitris Papageorgiou and the head of foreign affairs for the ELAS party, Haris Tzimitras.
