Ambassador of Cuba Calls on Foreign Minister

During a courtesy call today, Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, His Excellency Narciso Reinaldo Amador Socorro, congratulated Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Honourable Hugh Todd on his recent appointment.

“It is the will of the Government of Cuba to continue working, as we have historically, to strengthen the friendly ties between Guyana and Cuba,” the Ambassador said.

Further, he noted that the Cuban Government stands prepared to extend medical support to Guyana to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minister Todd expressed his gratitude to the Ambassador for his continued support.

The Foreign Minister lauded the resilience of the Government and people of Cuba, noting that the country has been successful in asserting itself into the global community by building strong relations around the world.

“Ties between Cuba and Caribbean Community (CARICOM) have grown from strength to strength within the last two decades and CARICOM has great respect for the Government and people of Cuba,” the Foreign Minister stated.

Furthermore, the Minister expressed enthusiasm in the deepening of the long-standing relationship between Guyana and Cuba and by extension CARICOM.

Guyana and Cuba established diplomatic relations on December 8, 1972. Guyana’s Health Sector has and continues to benefit tremendously from the Guyana/Cuba Cooperation Programme. There are over 160 medical personnel under the Cuban Medical Brigade working at health facilities across the country. Guyana has also benefitted from several scholarships in areas including Medical Psychology, Agriculture, Architecture, Economics, Engineering, Agronomy, Computer Science, and Dentistry.
