Ambassador of Cuba to Ghana outlines ties between Cuba and Africa

The Ambassador of Cuba, Pedro Luis González Despaigne, participated in a Panel made up of diplomats from Latin American countries accredited in Ghana and which was organized by the College of Humanities of the University of Ghana on the theme Africa´s Engagement with Latin America.

The Ambassadors of Colombia and Cuba, and the Chargé d’ Affairs a.i., of Brazil and Peru, in an interesting political and academic debate exchanged ideas about the African heritage in its respective countries. The Cuban Ambassador explained how the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959 has impacted over the relation with a continent that in that moment was fighting for its independence.

The Cuban Ambassador explained the philosophy of the Cuban Revolution in its relationship with Africa, and demonstrated the role played in its implementation by the Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro who said that Cuba was a Latin-African country.

The Ambassador emphasized on the cooperation between Cuba and Ghana and informed that Cuba has trained more than 3,000 Ghanaians in different specialties, and since 1983 until now the Caribbean Island has offered health services in Ghana with Cuban doctors and nurses. In the conclusion of his intervention the Cuban diplomat thanked the African countries for the solidarity with Cuba in the struggle against the blockade.

The workshop was attended by members of the Diplomatic Corps, officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as professors and students from the University of Ghana.
