Ambassador of Cuba to Jamaica holds courtesy meeting with Secretary General of the International Seabed Authority.

Kingston, 29 January 2025. The Ambassador of Cuba in Jamaica and Permanent Representative to the International Seabed Authority (ISA), Fermín Quiñones Sánchez, paid a courtesy visit to Mrs. Leticia Carvalho, the new Secretary General of this international organisation.

During the exchange, the Cuban diplomat congratulated Mrs. Carvalho on her election and reiterated the importance given by our country to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea for the maintenance and strengthening of peace, international law and sustainable development in the oceans and seas. Ambassador Quiñones Sánchez also condemned the impact of the genocidal policy of the blockade and Cuba's continued inclusion on the spurious and unilateral list of countries sponsoring terrorism, which affects the island's compliance with its financial commitments to international organisations, including the ISA.

Both parties recognised the relevance of strengthening international cooperation in the management of marine resources and in the care of the oceans and their biodiversity, defending the common heritage of humanity, as one of the principles of international law.

Mrs. Leticia Carvalho officially assumed the position of Secretary General of ISA  on 2 January 2025, a milestone for the organisation as the first woman, the first Latin American and the first oceanographer to hold this position.
