The Ambassador of Cuba to Jamaica presents Letters of Credence to the International Seabed Authority

Kingston, Jamaica, 9 February 2022. The Ambassador of Cuba, Fermín Quiñones Sánchez, presented on Wednesday afternoon to the Secretary General of the International Seabed Authority (ISA), HE. Mr. Michael W. Lodge, the Credentials that accredit him as the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cuba to this international organization.

During the cordial meeting, Mr. Lodge warmly welcomed the Cuban Ambassador and assured that he looks forward to working closely with him and the Government of Cuba to ensure that the specific and unique mandate assigned to ISA under the legal regime for the Area contained in the Convention is strengthened with a view to delivering tangible results for the benefit of all its Members and developing States.

The Cuban Ambassador, for his part, assured that Cuba attaches fundamental importance to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea for the maintenance and strengthening of peace, international law and sustainable development in the oceans and seas. He added that it is particularly relevant to strengthen international cooperation in the management of marine resources and the care of the oceans and their biodiversity, defending the common heritage of mankind, as one of the principles of international law.

The International Seabed Authority, which is based in Kingston, was created on 16 November 1994, with the entry into force of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the 1994 Agreement on the application of Part XI of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. It is the organization through which the States parties to the Convention organize and control the activities carried out on the seabed and its subsoil outside the limits of national jurisdiction.
