Ambassador of Cuba to Jamaica visits G.C. Foster College

Spanish Town, 1 April 2026. The Ambassador of Cuba to Jamaica, Tania López Larroque, paid a visit to the ‘CG Foster’ College of Physical Education and Sport, an educational institution donated by Cuba to the brotherly Jamaican people. The idea for this college was conceived following Fidel’s first visit to Jamaica and his discussions with the then Prime Minister, Michael Manley. Both leaders regarded sport as a powerful unifying force that promotes healthy competition, goodwill and tolerance. The Cuban diplomat was received by the college’s senior management, led by the Chairman of the Board, Vishwanauth Tolan, and its Principal, Maurice Wilson.

The Cuban diplomat highlighted the achievements of the institution over the decades and the potential for collaboration in the fields of sport and teacher training with Cuban institutions. She also reaffirmed that, despite the difficulties imposed by the genocidal blockade policy, integral sports training at all levels remains a priority of the Revolution, remaining faithful to the maxim that ‘sport is a right of the people’.

For their part, Tolan and Wilson expressed their gratitude for the “magnificent gift from Fidel and the Cuban people”, highlighting the centre’s importance in the training of Jamaican athletes.

On the occasion of the centenary of the Commander-in-Chief’s birth, the Ambassador presented an iconic photograph of the leader of the Cuban Revolution, a symbol of his passion for our national sport: baseball. The centre’s executives thanked her for the gesture, highlighting the enduring legacy of Fidel among the Jamaican people.

During the meeting, which turned into an act of solidarity with Cuba, members of the teaching staff and administrative personnel presented the Cuban Ambassador with a donation of solar-powered lights, a clear demonstration that the Largest of the Antilles is not alone in the face of the new imperialist offensive.
