Abuja, February 12, 2026.– The Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Miriam Morales Palmero, held a cordial and fruitful meeting with former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.
During the exchange, the former Head of State expressed interest in the current situation of the Cuban people, marked by the recent intensification of coercive measures imposed by the Government of the United States, including the executive order issued by President Donald Trump that seeks to prevent third countries from trading oil with Cuba, in clear violation of international law and the sovereignty of nations, and with the sole purpose of suffocating the Cuban people.
Former President Obasanjo conveyed his firm solidarity with Cuba and its people, while condemning the cruel, inhumane, and unjust nature of U.S. policy toward the Island. He also highlighted the historic resilience of the Cuban people and the moral strength that has always characterized them in the face of adversity.
For her part, the Ambassador expressed her deep gratitude for the words of support and encouragement, and underscored the strong bonds of friendship and cooperation between Cuba and Nigeria, which were significantly strengthened during President Obasanjo’s tenure. During that period, important cooperation programs were consolidated in sectors such as health, education, and human resources training, including the presence of Cuban collaborators in Nigeria and the granting of scholarships to Nigerian youth to pursue studies in Cuba.
During the meeting, the former President expressed his interest in exploring various avenues through which he could continue contributing to support and accompany Cuba, reiterating that the Island can always count on the solidarity of the peoples of Africa, with whom it maintains historic, deep, and unbreakable ties.
The dialogue reaffirmed the mutual respect and affinity existing between both countries, as well as the shared will to continue strengthening relations of friendship and cooperation between Cuba and Africa.
