The Ambassador of Cuba to Ghana, Pedro Luis Despaigne González, on behalf of the government and the Cuban people, attended the funeral of the former Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Busumuru Kofi Annan.
After his death on August 18, 2018, his relatives and the government of Ghana received numerous expressions of condolences, including those of the President of the Councils of State and Ministers of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, who characterized him of "outstanding son of Africa and active promoter of multilateralism".
In the funeral honors rendered in Accra, a group of Heads of State of the region and other personalities met, among them: the Secretary General of the UN, Mr. Antonio Guterres, and the Presidents of Namibia, Côte d'Ivôire, Sierra Leona and Liberia, Mr. Hage Geingob, Mr. Alassane Ouattara, Mr. Julius Maada Bio and Mr. George Weah, respectively.
The leading figures of the Ghanaian state, led by President Nana Akufo-Addo, as well as traditional leaders, politicians and religious, members of Parliament, civil society organizations and the Diplomatic Corps took part in the funeral ceremonies, which included the visit to the Accra International Press Center, where his remains were exposed (covered by the national flag) for three days. The prominent Ghanaian diplomat was buried in the Burma Camp Military Cemetery.
The former Secretary General of the UN visited Cuba twice, in September 2006 during the XIV Non-Aligned Countries Summit, where he met the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Commander in Chief, Fidel, and who after a conversation of more than an hour gave him the book of interviews written by Ignacio Ramonet, "One Hundred Hours with Fidel". In February 2015, Kofi Annan returned to Cuba to participate in the signing of the Peace Accords of Colombia, at which time he was received by Army General Raul Castro.
The staff of the Embassy of Cuba also paid posthumous tribute to the former Secretary General of the UN.
