The Ambassador of Cuba, Pedro Luis Despaigne González, received in his office a delegation of the Private Universities Students’ Association of Ghana (PUSAG), headed by its President and Executive Director, Mr. Samuel Okyere Sarpong.
The Cuban Ambassador gave an overview of the history and the current situation of the student movement in Cuba and highlighted the inclusion in its ranks of more than three thousand young Ghanaians who, during more than five decades, have studied in the largest of the Antilles. He also reaffirmed Cuba's commitment to the people of Ghana, arguing that bilateral relations were forged by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and Commander in Chief Fidel Castro.
The Cuban diplomat, after explaining the situation of Cuba after the passing of Hurricane Irma, emphasized how the Trump administration has reinforced the blockade against the Cuban people. Also made reference to how despite this genocidal policy, the Cuban cooperation to other countries remains, but not at the same conditions than before, being Ghana a concrete example of that.
The visitors, who explained that for the first time they contacted the Cuban Embassy, expressed their admirations for the social work of the Cuban Revolution, as well as the rejection of the blockade. They asked to contact Cuban student organizations, in order to exchange experiences. They announced that at the beginning of October they will celebrate its eleventh Congress.
Mr. Okyere Sarpong was accompanied by Mr. Peter Worlasi Adanu, Head of Operations for the organization and by PUSAG Adviser, Mr. Oliver K. M. Aziator. The First Secretary of the Cuban Embassy, Julio César Sánchez Martínez was also at the meeting.
