Singapore, February 20th, 2025. The Ambassador of Cuba in Singapore, H.E. Lisbet Quesada Luna, participated in the strategical first General Assembly of International Organization for Marine Aids to Navigation (IALA). Cuba has been a member of @IALAISM since 1968 and has incorporated its recommendations, guidelines, and standards of the Aids to Maritime Navigation service.
In 2022, Cuba signed with 25 countries the Convention on the International Organization for Aid to Maritime Navigation (IALA), an initiative aimed at enhancing cooperation and the effectiveness of operations in this sector.
In 2024, the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) announces that it has officially changed its status from a non-governmental organization (NGO) to an Intergovernmental Organization (IGO).
The new status represents a significant victory for multilateralism and ocean governance, marking an important step toward enhancing worldwide safety of navigation, efficiency and protection of the marine environment.
The transition to an IGO will place IALA in a much stronger position to develop and harmonize Marine Aids to Navigation, as governments will be directly involved in their work.
