Ambassador Rodolfo Benítez Verson, Permanent Representative of Cuba, speaks on the occasion of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Guyana. 49th session of the Human Rights Council’s UPR Working Group.

Mr. President,

We extend a warm welcome to the delegation of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, led by the Minister of Tourism, Industry, and Commerce. We recognize the country’s commitment to the Universal Periodic Review.

We note that Guyana has significantly increased its responses to requests for information from special procedures and has strengthened cooperation with the United Nations human rights mechanisms, which are universally applicable and not selective.

We acknowledge the country’s comprehensive efforts toward sustainable growth and improving the quality of life of its population.

We commend Guyana for achieving the goal of net-zero carbon emissions to the atmosphere and for its positive results in tackling climate change.

In a constructive spirit, we recommend:

  1. Continue supporting climate justice initiatives, primarily for Small Island Developing States.
  2. Continue national efforts to reduce poverty and geographical disparities.
  3.  Develop special programs to address social issues, with a particular focus on youth support.
  4. Continue strengthening programs and initiatives to reduce violence against women and children.
  5. Continue implementing anti-corruption measures with technical support from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

We wish Guyana every success in this review and in implementing the accepted recommendations.

Thank you.
