Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations Office at Geneva

Ambassador Rodolfo Benítez Verson, Permanent Representative of Cuba, speaks at the plenary session of the Conference on Disarmament on the deployment of United States military forces in the Caribbean sea.

Madam President,

Cuba strongly rejects the current deployment of United States naval and air forces in the Caribbean Sea.

This dangerous act represents a grave threat to regional peace and security. It is an aggressive show of force that undermines the sovereignty and self-determination of the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean.

It also ignores the commitment of the 33 member countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States to proclaim the region a Zone of Peace.
