Mr. President,
Cuba regrets that, once again, this Council dedicates its valuable time and significant financial and human resources to an interventionist and sterile exercise against Eritrea, arising from a selective, politicized, and unbalanced mechanism imposed since 2012.
We oppose any mechanism that undermines the principles enshrined in the UN Charter, including respect for sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of States.
The only effective way to promote human rights in any country is through respectful dialogue and genuine cooperation, based on impartiality, objectivity, mutual respect, and non-politicization.
We reiterate our call to set aside the obsolete and ineffective punitive practices of this Council against countries of the South.
The first step towards a new approach by the Council regarding Eritrea would be to demand the immediate cessation of the unilateral coercive measures imposed against that country, to the detriment of the human rights of its people.
Thank you very much.
