Ambassador Rodolfo Benítez Verson speaks at the adoption of the report of the Universal Periodic Review of Norway. 58th Human Rights Council

Mr. President,

We extend our greetings to the delegation of Norway. We acknowledge Norway’s commitment to the Universal Periodic Review as an appropriate mechanism for addressing the challenges faced by all States, on an equal footing, with regard to human rights. No country is exempt from challenges in this area.

We are not satisfied that Norway has accepted only two out of the five respectful and constructive recommendations made by our delegation. At the same time, we respect its sovereign right to decide which recommendations it deems appropriate, without interference.

We encourage Norway to undertake a comprehensive review of the national guidelines for providing quality healthcare services and to ensure proper treatment of individuals deprived of liberty, particularly those belonging to the most vulnerable groups.

We urge the country to continue addressing cases of violence, abuse, and severe neglect against children.

We encourage the country's authorities to implement the recommendations with an inclusive, comprehensive and self-critical approach.

We wish Norway success in implementing the recommendations and express our support for the adoption of the report.

Thank you.
