Mr. President,
No government should engage in a policy that causes hunger in other nations. Yet, the United States insists on depriving the Cuban people of their right to food.
Four months of the United States blockade cause Cuba losses amounting to USD 1.6 billion. That money could ensure a whole year's supply of the basic rationed food basket for our population.
The blockade also has a very severe impact on food production in Cuba, hindering the availability of fuel, seeds, fertilisers, animal feed, and other inputs. Between 2023 and 2024, the blockade caused damages exceeding USD 441 million to the agriculture and food sector.
The Cuban government is working tirelessly on finding solutions to this adverse challenge, with a commitment to leave no one behind or excluded. As established by our Constitution, all individuals have the right to healthy and adequate food.
The planet produces enough food to feed the entire population. However, 343 million people suffered from hunger in 2024, representing a 10% increase from the previous year. By 2025, the number of hungry people is expected to increase.
We can no longer postpone progress towards a new, more just and equitable international order.
With regard to Venezuela, we commend its numerous efforts to implement policies that ensure access to food, despite the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures.
We reiterate our support for the mandate of the Special Rapporteur. Cuba will submit a draft resolution on the right to food at this session. We thank you in advance for your valuable support for this important text.
Thank you.
