Ambassador Rodolfo Benítez Verson speaks at the general debate on item 7 “Human rights situation in Palestine and other Occupied Arab Territories”. 58th Human Rights Council.

Mr. President,

Israel threatens to exterminate the Palestinian population, under the indifferent gaze of the international community.

Not only are their human rights and all United Nations resolutions being flagrantly violated; the Palestinian people are facing an existential threat.

The genocide being perpetrated is a continuation of over seven decades of illegal occupation, abuse, and exclusion.

How much more destruction is required before real action is taken against the massacre, rather than delivering speeches?

Every minute of inaction will result in further loss of innocent lives, more mutilated, detained and displaced people. The suffering will only deepen.

The United Nations and this Council cannot continue to fail Palestine.

Israel's impunity is only made possible by the declared complicity of the United States government, which provides full support to the Occupying Power. Equally guilty are those who remain indifferent, silent, or attempt to justify what is happening.

The International Court of Justice has called on all states to refrain from providing aid to Israel. Yet, we hear very few voices in this room demanding the United States to stop sending weapons and military aid, which are used by Israel to claim more innocent lives.

Mr. President,

The Palestinian people are suffering a humanitarian catastrophe of extreme proportions. Famine and water deprivation are being used as a weapon of war.

Cuba demands the immediate and lasting restoration of ceasefire and the unrestricted entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.

Our country has joined the legal proceeding initiated against Israel at the International Court of Justice, demanding that the aggressor be held accountable for violating its obligations under the 1948 Genocide Convention.

Achieving peace in the Middle East is unattainable without a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian question.  A sovereign and independent Palestinian State is not possible without Gaza. No peace formula is viable unless it includes Palestine's admission as a member State of the United Nations, where it rightfully belongs.

The brotherly Palestinian people can always count on Cuba's unwavering support and solidarity.

Thank you.
