AOSIS recognizes Cuba's efforts in the development of vaccines against COVID-19

New York, April 12, 2021.- The Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), recognized the efforts of Cuba, one of its member states, in the development of vaccine candidates against COVID- 19, during the Special Segment on Financing the Covid-19 Recovery, which takes place under the Forum on Financing for Development of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. (ECOSOC acronym in English).

“We are honored to note that despite the many challenges facing small island developing states (SIDS), one of ours, the Republic of Cuba, is leading efforts in developing a vaccine and recently received rave reviews from of the WHO. The small island states will continue to be pioneers in all aspects of society and will continue to advocate for a more just, equitable and equitable world, ”said the Honorable Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, the country that chairs the Alliance, on behalf of the grouping.

The Antigua Prime Minister also firmly rejected the imposition of unilateral coercive economic measures against developing countries, stressing that such actions are incompatible with the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter and international law. In this context, he called on the international community to adopt urgent and effective measures to eliminate such measures.
