Abuja, February 24th, 2026.- Former Minister of Interior and Honorary President of the Nigeria Movement of Solidarity with Cuba (NMSC), Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has called for increased international solidarity with Cuba, expressing concern over the humanitarian situation in the country.
Aregbesola spoke in Abuja at a conference organised by the NMSC with the theme, “Cuba and All Countries Have the Right to Live.”
He said reports of fuel and energy shortages in Cuba have affected essential services, including hospitals and laboratories.
“Available reports indicate that fuel and energy constraints are impacting critical institutions such as hospitals and laboratories. This is the time Cuba needs solidarity from all peoples of the world,” Aregbesola said.
He urged African countries to support Cuba, stating that solidarity aligns with principles of international cooperation and mutual respect among nations.
“We Africans ally with the Cuban people because they have the right, like all other peoples, to live in peace and pursue their development,” he said.
Labour Leaders Express Support
The President of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Comrade Festus Osifo, also addressed the conference, emphasizing the importance of national sovereignty and non-interference.
“The TUC believes that no nation should be subjected to external interference or measures that negatively affect the welfare of its citizens. Our concern as trade unionists is always for workers and vulnerable populations, who are often most affected by economic restrictions,” Osifo said.
Similarly, James Imoyera of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Research Department called for policy reviews affecting Cuba.
“We call for constructive engagement that supports the welfare of the Cuban people and promotes access to essential services,” he said.
The Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria, Miriam Morales Palmero, appealed for expanded advocacy and engagement in support of Cuba across various sectors.
“We encourage friends of Cuba to continue promoting dialogue and cooperation across trade unions, academic institutions, youth organisations, and the media,” Palmero said.
She also commended Nigeria’s longstanding relationship with Cuba.
“Nigeria and Cuba share a history of cooperation and mutual respect. We value that relationship and look forward to strengthening it further,” she added.
The conference concluded with participants reiterating calls for dialogue, peaceful cooperation, and respect for national sovereignty in international relations.
