Jakarta, June 24.- At the headquarters of the United Nations General Assembly for six consecutive years, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), explained the bloc's vote in support of the Resolution “Need to put an end to the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba ”.
On behalf of ASEAN, the representative of Singapore, recalling that the Cuban resolution has been adopted by an overwhelming majority since it was first presented in 1992, pointed out that the North American blockade continues to affect many sectors of Cuban society, and It even limits the island's ability to acquire materials necessary to face the COVID-19 pandemic, which is why the Group is against the imposition of unilateral economic, commercial and financial measures on other countries.
Likewise, the representative recorded the Group's firm commitment to the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter, which underpin the rules-based multilateral order, as well as its firm conviction that differences between States must be resolved through commitment and inclusion, not confrontation and isolation. She added that these differences must be resolved on the basis of the fundamental principles of sovereign equality, non-interference and non-intervention.
The representative reiterated ASEAN's conviction that the end of this policy will contribute significantly to improving the quality and standard of living of the Cuban people, and to the economic and social development of Cuba, in addition to promoting the efforts of the UNGA to achieve the 2030 Agenda.
