Social isolation imposed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic did not prevent Cubans in Jamaica from celebrating yesterday, June 14, the 175th and 92nd anniversaries of the births of Antonio Maceo Grajales and Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, respectively.

Kingston, Jamaica, 15 June 2020. Directors and members of the Association of Cuban Residents in Jamaica (ACRJ) recorded an emotional 3-minute video, paying tribute to these two leading figures in the history of Cuba and the Americas. In their short video, they also called for peace, understanding and justice, and concluded by thanking the humanistic work of Cuban doctors who fight SARS-CoV-2 in dozens of countries around the world, including Jamaica.

Traditionally, this June 14 event is held in Jamaica next to the bust of Maceo on the National Heroes Park in Kingston, with a considerable participation of Cuban residents, members of the Cuban education and health cooperation brigades and Jamaican friends from the Solidarity Movement with Cuba. The ACRJ’s initiative made it possible to commemorate such an important date in the midst of difficult circumstances that call everybody to stay at home.

The ACRJ, which bears the glorious name of “Antonio Maceo”, enjoys a well-deserved prestige in the country as a representative of the Cuban community established on the island. Since 2019, it has been legally registered with the Jamaican authorities, and currently gathers more than 60 full members.
