Barbados and CDEMA at a scientific event in Cuba on disasters and climate change.

Ramon Roach, from the Department of Disaster Management of Barbados and Clive Murray, director of CDEMA, together with 40 Cuban delegates and 30 from the 14 Member States of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), attend the UNESCO International Scientific School, organized in Havana in coordination with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA) of Cuba from May 29 to June 1, to exchange about the Cuban experience in confronting climate change with the Caribbean countries and will discuss about relevant issues focused on the construction of resilient societies, through the link of research with disaster risk reduction and adaptation to climate change in the subregion.

Chaired by Elba Rosa Pérez, Cuban Minister of CITMA, the event based on the Life Task, Cuban State Plan for the confrontation to climate change, which is a pioneering action of the Caribbean island in response to this phenomenon, will dedicate its inaugural day to adaptation to climate change in the small island developing states of the Caribbean. Other topics will focus on the integrating vision of disaster risk reduction, the strengthening of cooperation to reduce these dangers, and the development of resilience in the face of climate change.

The International Scientific School is attended by Nada Al-Nashif, deputy general director for Social Sciences of the world organization, who visits Cuba for the second time, said Olga Rufins, national program officer, of the UNESCO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean of Unesco. The event will conclude with the field visit of some participants to the Sierra del Rosario, declared by the UN agency as one of the six biosphere reserves in Cuba.
