Responding to an invitation by the Workers' Central Union of Cuba (CTC) and its national unions for several organizations Barbadian labor movement, a representative delegation of the NUPW (National Union Public Workers) and BSTU (Barbados Secondary Teachers Union) attended the May Day international celebration in Havana, which included a massive march in parade of about a million population and witness the ceremony from the presidential platform in the historical Revolution Square. The NUPW was represented this time by its President Akanni McDowall, its General Secretary, Roslyn Smith, and Treasurer Asokore Beckles. The BSTU was represented by its President Mary Redman.
The delegation, which also political activists and social Barbadians joined, was specially invited by ICAP (Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples) for an interview with its Vice President and Hero of the Republic of Cuba, Fernando Gonzalez, one of The Cuban Five, who thanked the solidarity of Barbadian political and social forces during the long battle for their release from US jails for fighting against terrorism. ICAP extended the invitation to participate in the International Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba, held on May 2 every year with all delegations attending the festivities of workers.
