Jakarta, 5 March- At the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) headquarters, its Secretary General Ms. HE Ar. Siti Rozaimeriyanty Dato Haji Abdul Rahman, received the Ambassador of Cuba in the Republic of Indonesia, Tania Velázquez López, in a courtesy visit.
In conversation during the meeting, the two officials discussed the longstanding friendship between the Caribbean island and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), a group of ten nations in Southeast Asia.
The AIPA Secretary General provided an overview of the organization, pointing out that ten years after the ASEAN Declaration in 1967, its member states encouraged the idea of creating an interparliamentary forum that could act as a communication and information hub between parliaments of the ASEAN.
The Cuban Ambassador spoke about Cuba's interest in establishing a cordial dialogue, information sharing, and cooperation between the Cuban Parliament and the ASEAN Interparliamentary Assembly as well as the historical ties that the Caribbean island shares with each of the ten Southeast Asian nations that make up ASEAN. Additionally, he thanked ASEAN for continuing to support the Cuban Resolution opposing the US blockade and for unanimously approving Cuba's adherence to the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation during its 37th Summit on November 10, 2020.
Cuba became the first Caribbean nation and the fifth Latin American nation to achieve so with the aforementioned admittance, demonstrating the confidence of its then ASEAN members states in the Cuba´s commitment of friendship and capacity for cooperation.
