New York, March 14th, 2023.- Cuba participated at the first session of the Development Cooperation Forum, scenario of great relevance to the global dialogue and the political recommendations on international cooperation for development, that takes place at the United Nations headquarters.
On behalf of the Group 77 and China, Ambassador Yusnier Romero Puentes, deputy permanent representative of Cuba to United Nations, addressed as fundamental that the international community grants more permanent and stable, predictable, concessional and conditionally free financial resources for developing countries, in particular, those most needed and least developed.
While describing the critical momentum living the world with important setbacks in health, education and quality of life, where many developing countries face the risk of being left behind, Romero Puentes stated it was imperative to urgently promote the transfer of technology and the building of capacities, as well as the scientific and technological cooperation from developed to developing countries, aiming at bolstering the sustainable development in its three dimensions.
In this regard, he reaffirmed that the imposition of coercive economic measures, including unilateral sanctions, against developing countries, does not contribute to the economic and social development, including dialogue, cooperation and understanding among the countries.
Ambassador Romero Puentes reiterated the importance and contribution of South-South cooperation to face the important challenges and development goals. South-South cooperation is expression of South-South solidarity which has demonstrated its value through a rapid growth, and it’s clear, he further stated, that the latter does not substitute the North-South cooperation but it’s rather a complement of it.
The Cuban diplomat concluded his statement calling the United Nations funds and programmes and the specialized agencies to continue adopting concrete measures to mainstream support for South-South cooperation and the triangular cooperation to help developing to increase their capacities to maximize the benefits and impact of South-South and triangular cooperation.
