he Hague, October 11, 2016. The Permanent Representative of Cuba to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Ambassador Fermín Quiñones Sánchez, demanded the immediate and unconditional lifting of the economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed by the Government of the United States against Cuba for over 50 years, during his speech at the General Debate of the 83rd Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), which is in session from October 11 to October 14 in The Hague, Netherlands.
The Cuban diplomat denounced the blockade describing it as a “blatant violation of the letter and the spirit of the Convention on Chemical Weapons (CWC) which explicitly prohibits the States Party to maintain any restrictions among themselves that would restrict or impede trade and the development and promotion of scientific and technological knowledge in the field of chemistry for industrial, agricultural, research, medical, pharmaceutical or other peaceful purposes.”
During the meeting, Cuba also reiterated its unchanging position of principles in favor of the prohibition and elimination of all the weapons of mass destruction, including the nuclear and chemical ones. (Cubaminrex/EmbaCuba Países Bajos).
