Buena Vista Social Club wins five Tony Awards

The history and power of Cuban music have once again conquered the world. Once again, the Buena Vista Social Club is the inspiration for a story about one of the legendary groups of Cuban musicians who cultivated Son Cubano in the 1930s-1950s, some of whom reunited in 1996. Since then, their recordings and international performances have transcended with a Grammy Award and an Oscar nomination for the film Buena Vista Social Club.

This time, their story and music transcend the stage once again through the awards won by the musical Buena Vista Social Club, inspired by real events and the iconic Grammy-winning album, which received five awards at the 2025 Tony Awards, out of a total of eleven nominations, marking a milestone for Cuban culture on Broadway.

The play, which officially debuted on 19 March at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, revives the origins and significance of the legendary Cuban group, born from a proposal conceived in the United Kingdom to bring together the most outstanding exponents of son and bolero in a single group. Since then, Buena Vista Social Club has not only made history, but has also become a symbol of Cuba's musical identity.
