The Cuban Institute for Friendship with Peoples (ICAP) and the World Peace Council (WPC) invite participants to participate in the VIII International Seminar for Peace and for the Abolition of Foreign Military Bases, to be held in Guantánamo Province on May 4 and 5, 2024. Once again, this edition will take place in the province of Guantánamo, where there is a U.S. military base against the will of the Cuban people and government, which for 121 years has illegally occupied 117 square kilometers of that territory, and a prison where the human rights of those detained there are constantly violated, which constitute an affront to the sovereignty and independence of the nation.
Cuba rejects the existence of more than 800 military bases and installations that the United States has with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) around the world. Of these, 70 belong to the Latin American and Caribbean region, contradicting the postulates of the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, adopted during the Second CELAC Summit by all the Heads of State and Government of the region, meeting in Havana in January 2014.
In view of this irrefutable reality, we invite to this forum defenders of peace, researchers and specialists committed to denouncing the existence of arbitrary foreign military bases and installations. We also intend to address the following issues:
- Main problems caused by the presence of these military bases and installations in the enclaved territories.
- Challenges and threats facing world peace, with the advance of the so-called “cyber war,” aimed at imposing an international cultural and political change in favor of the hegemonic interests of the United States and its acolytes, as a new type of unconventional war.
- Existence of weapons of mass destruction, a threat to world peace and international security
- The fight against armaments, the increase in military budgets and other causes that tear world peace.
Those interested in participating should send their applications to the following email addresses: icapdeguantanamo@gmail.com; cubaporlapaz@gmail.com and eventos@amistur.cu. Participants will have 10 minutes for presentations of papers and interventions, in which case it is requested that the texts be sent to the above mentioned posts before 20 April in Spanish or English. The travel agency AMISTUR CUBA S.A., of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), will be in charge of guaranteeing the accommodation, transportation, accreditation, and general logistics of the event.
