Caribbean intellectual Godfrey Martin published an article in The New Today titled “Hands off Cuba – We must stand firm with Cuba and ensure its sovereignty prevails”, in which he condemns the U.S. blockade and calls for the defense of the Island’s sovereignty. The text underscores that Cuba has historically been a bastion of support for oppressed peoples and that its resistance to imperialist aggression deserves regional and international backing.
Martin recalls that the Cuban Revolution, led by Fidel Castro, inspired generations of fighters for independence and social justice across the Caribbean. In his analysis, he cites figures such as Maurice Bishop to highlight Cuba’s influence on emancipatory processes and the construction of political alternatives to colonialism and external domination.
The author further emphasizes Cuba’s role in medical and humanitarian cooperation, noting that thousands of health professionals have been sent to different countries as a gesture of solidarity. In this regard, he denounces that the blockade seeks to undermine this capacity for assistance and isolate the Island, but affirms that the Caribbean community has the responsibility to prevent it.
Martin also urges CARICOM and the United Nations to speak out firmly against Washington’s policy and to ensure that Cuban sovereignty prevails. His article comes within a context of growing solidarity in Grenada and across the region, where intellectual, political, and social voices agree that defending Cuba is also defending the dignity and independence of all Caribbean peoples.
