Havana, April 24, 2021.- The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Immigration of Belize, and President of the Council on Foreign and Community Relations of CARICOM, Eamon Courtenay, urged the Secretary of State of the United States, to fulfill his commitment to review the current policy towards Cuba and asked him to do so "as soon as possible, with a view to resuming the policy of detente."
The statement was produced during the virtual round table held between the US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the CARICOM Member States, which was held on April 21.
On January 13, 2021, CARICOM issued a statement denouncing "the unilateral declaration of the outgoing United States administration to designate Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism."
The communiqué clarified that “Cuba's international conduct does not justify this appointment in any way. This new attack on the country negatively affects its international position and its social, human and economic development and is another wrong action in addition to the unproductive, unnecessary and illegal financial and economic blockade already imposed on this Caribbean nation by the United States. "
CARICOM called for "the immediate review and reversal of these unjustified actions taken with respect to Cuba and hopes that the United States will move towards normalizing relations with Cuba."
