Celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Cuba and New Zealand

Wellington, October 16, 2024.- To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, an exhibition of Cuban art by renowned visual artist Yosvany Martínez Pérez was inaugurated at the New Zealand Parliament. The ceremony was attended by Gerry Brownlee, Speaker of the House, Todd McClay, Minister of Agriculture and Trade and Associate Minister for Foreign Affairs, representatives of all parliamentary parties, James Waite, Director of the Americas at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, members of the Diplomatic Corps, journalists, and friends of Cuba.

In a recorded message, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Cuba's Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the importance of the 25 years of bilateral relations between Cuba and New Zealand. During his address, he highlighted key aspects of joint collaboration, including mutual support in international forums and cooperation programs in areas such as health and education. He also referenced the intensification of U.S. sanctions and called for the removal of Cuba from the spurious list of state sponsors of terrorism. Lastly, he extended a warm greeting to all those present, reaffirming Cuba's commitment to continue strengthening ties with New Zealand.

In his speech, the Speaker of Parliament highlighted the significance of relations between the two countries and underscored the existing potential to expand and diversify bilateral ties. Brownlee praised the shared values and cooperation that have characterized these 25 years of diplomatic relations.

For his part, the Cuban Ambassador underscored the special significance of this celebration, coinciding with the Cuban Culture Day festivities, a symbol of the Cuban people’s resilience, pride, and national unity. He also stressed that, despite the geographical distance, the bonds between Cuba and New Zealand have remained strong, built on mutual respect and a shared commitment to peace and prosperity.

As a token of Cuba’s friendship, the Cuban Ambassador presented the Speaker of Parliament with an artwork from the exhibition, depicting the Cuban Capitol, home to the country’s National Assembly.

On behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Director of the Americas reiterated the importance of the bilateral relations between the two countries, expressing gratitude for Cuba’s contribution to the development of small Pacific Island states. He also emphasized New Zealand’s willingness to continue developing economic, commercial, and cooperative relations.

The evening concluded with a performance by artist Carlos Navae, who delighted attendees with a wide and varied repertoire of traditional Cuban music, accompanied by the customary mojitos and a selection of Cuban cuisine, adding an authentic touch to the celebration.

This event not only celebrated the 25 years of friendship and cooperation between Cuba and New Zealand but also reinforced both nations’ commitment to continuing to strengthen their bilateral relations in the future.
