Cuba opens the 24th Latin American Film Festival in Palmerston North with the screening of “El Benny”

Palmerston North, 23 September 2026. The Ambassador of Cuba to New Zealand, Luis Ernesto Morejón, joined the opening of the 24th Latin American Film Festival in Palmerston North with a screening of the Cuban film El Benny, directed by Jorge Luis Sánchez.

In his opening remarks, Ambassador Morejón highlighted that the Festival has become much more than a series of film screenings. It is a meeting place where cultures come together, conversations begin, friendships grow, and cinema helps audiences understand other societies and how they have changed over time.

Cuban Ambassador bids farewell to Palmerston North, highlighting friendship and people-to-people ties

Palmerston North, 23 September 2026. The Ambassador of Cuba to New Zealand, Luis Ernesto Morejón, paid a farewell visit to the Palmerston North Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee as his diplomatic mission in Aotearoa New Zealand draws to a close.

Addressing the Committee, Ambassador Morejón reflected on the special place Palmerston North has come to hold for him and his family during their three years in New Zealand. He noted that they had first arrived as official visitors but were leaving as friends of the city and its people.

New Zealand marks Fidel Castro centenary with events in Christchurch

Christchurch, New Zealand, 15 August 2026 — A series of events marking the centenary of the birth of Fidel Castro Ruz, historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, were held in Christchurch on 14 and 15 August, organised by the New Zealand Cuba Friendship Association.

The programme focused on Fidel Castro’s historical, political and humanitarian legacy, providing an opportunity for discussion and reflection on different aspects of Cuba’s experience and its international engagement.
