CENTRAL ACT FOR THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CHEMICAL WEAPONS CONVENTION IN CUBA.

 

Today 28th April, it took place the Central Act for the 20th anniversary of the Chemical Weapons Convention in Havana, Cuba, at the headquarters of the Cuban Association of the United Nations (ACNU).

The solemn ceremony was organized by the Cuban National Authority for the implementation of the Convention and was chaired by José Fidel Santana Núñez, Vice-Minister of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA), Fermín Quiñones Sánchez, Director General of ACNU and Alba Guillén Campos, representative of the Director General of the Office of Environmental Regulation and Nuclear Safety.

During the event, presentations were made on the importance of the Convention as a reference within the international disarmament structure, the characteristics and evolution of Cuban national implementation, the achievements of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and the decisive role to be played by international cooperation within its future priorities.

The national celebration after twenty years of coordinated work by the National Authority with all the institutions was the favorable occasion to recognize to individuals and institutions for their contribution to Cuba's strict compliance with the obligations of the Convention.

In his closing remarks, Vice-Minister José Fidel Santana reaffirmed the Cuban commitment to general and complete disarmament and the elimination of all weapons of mass extermination, preservation of the environment and renewal of the Cuban offer to cooperate with other States Parties that request it, to share experience in the implementation process of the Convention.
